I spend a lot of time with undergraduate students between the ages of 18 and 25, many, make that most, have no idea what they want to be when they grow up. That’s okay, neither do I! The advice I always give is, “Go work in a sector that fascinates you, go work for smart people you respect and can learn something from or go work for an organization you can be proud of! If you find all three, you are golden, but any one of the three is a great start.”
My grown up friend Dave is lucky enough to work for TOMS shoes at the HQ in California and this is a company to be proud of for sure! TOMS was founded on a simple premise: For every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One. Dave sends me links to the great initiatives they’ve got going on and I get excited just to know such a company exists!
So if you are a motivated individual, go out and get yourself a job for an organization like TOMS! If you are a little less motivated, go buy yourself a pair of TOMS shoes or at least kick off your shoes and participate in their annual One Day Without Shoes!
More information on TOMS initiatives can be found on their blog here! I am especially excited about their eyewear One for One: giving sight program!
