International Women’s Day in the News?

March 9th, 2009 Posted by Suzy Ogé

Tonight, the Women’s Business Initiative International celebrates its 3rd anniversary and holds it’s 4th annual event for International Women’s Day.  In preparation yesterday, I purchased a collection of International newspapers, such as The Wall Street Journal Europe and International Herald Tribune.  Scouring the papers for the typical annual articles comparing working women statistics around the world and attempting to calculate the gender pay gap.

Each year I quote a few of the most shocking statistics and remark what a shame it is that “Women and Work” stories are only newsworthy one day each year.   It is also worth noting that the statistics improve very little each year, particularly here in the Netherlands.

This year was the most shocking surprise ever!  There was not a single  article to be found about women in any of these papers.

Our event was a smashing success.  We focus on opportunity and possibility.  No statistics or historical data required!

It was a really enjoyable evening. The stats were not necessary, the speakers messages were clear, oppertunity and possibility will bring change.
