Reiki for Skeptics

August 12th, 2008 Posted by Suzy Ogé

In my business, consulting start-ups and small business owners, I regularly work with holistic and alternative practitioners in the booming wellness sector.  If you are looking for any of type of meditation,  yoga; from sweaty to spiritual, pilates; with or without the torture devices, aromatherapy, dream therapy, naturopathy, or even flower therapy, just give me a shout.

In general, these individuals are very passionate about what they do. I am equally passionate about helping them establish and expand their businesses, but I never fake a personal interest in their individual treatment methods.  In most cases, it becomes apparent in our initial meeting as I down my third cup of black coffee while they sip a Rooibos that I may be a bit too Type A to benefit from the treatment on offer.

So it was no coincidence that when Barbara Rogoski did a Reiki Healing demonstration at our office, I was extremely busy working upstairs. My leg was in a cast at the time and it would have been too much trouble to come downstairs anyway.  Fast forward 6 weeks later, the cast had come off without a hint of improvement, then a consultation and a cortisone injection in the US had provided days of relief that were waning.

When a business associate was busy and asked me to answer her mobile phone, I recognized Barbara’s voice and she asked about my leg.  Then she asked if she could come to my office and try Reiki Healing.  I said sure.  To be honest, if she had said she wanted to dip my leg in applesauce or had advised me to wear a purple woolly sock everyday, my answer would have been the same, sure.  I was desperate!

I include the bit about the coincidental phone call for two reasons.  I am sure most skeptics, like myself, would never try Reiki,so this explains how it came about and secondly, I know it will make some people (my clients mentioned above) happy to hear how the universe has a way of working.

We sat in the garden at my office for half an hour, and there isn’t much to report. It was quiet, no audible praying or chanting.  I went about my business and only thought about it later that evening when I realized that my leg kinda seemed better.  I waited another 24 hours to casually mention it to my co-skeptic, co-worker, and then I started wondering, “What if it really is better?”  I would have to completely change my mind set about it.  I thought Reiki might work for those that truly believe in it, but not for skeptics like me.  In the past 8 months with this annoying tibular tendinitis, I have tried mind over matter plenty of times on my own, to no avail.  Since I had no great expectations for Reiki Healing powers, that eliminates the placebo possibility.

I keep giving myself more time to decide if my ankle really is better, but I have to admit, it’s been a week now and I thought about the possibility of running today for the first time in ages.  I didn’t ask Barbara’s permission before posting this because she is enjoying a vacation on the beaches of Mexico, but I do know her business sense well enough to believe she won’t mind becoming known for her special offer- Reiki for Skeptics!
